« Welcome to Godonland »

Imet Godon for the first time in Le Touquet Paris-Plage. Alain had extended an invitation to me to exhibit at the museum and to meet his family. Scarcely arrived, I could sense a friendly, easy atmosphere. The briny air, the beach and its never ending dunes reminded me of the years I had spent in Normandy.

The hotel on the sea front was filled with paintings, colourful, joyful and evocative of the popular, playful style of Figuration Libre. All the walls were covered with them and at the bottom of each and every one was a signature: Godon. Indelibly stamped, Alain’s spirit roamed its corridors.
I wandered briefly around the town before meeting Alain. Through its illuminated shopfronts Godon’s paintings were there yet again lighting up the town with colour and vitality. Alain was everywhere. And at last, I met him.
A vivacious personality straight out of an Alexandre Dumas book, full of energy, a craftsman of words with a playful little moustache, Alain loves to take us on a journey with his words and funny stories. Alain isn’t just a painter of life; he is an outstanding story teller.
When the artistic effervescence of the eighties drew its contemporary artists to Paris, Alain himself preferred to build his life near the Channel. Passionate about architecture, he has constructed his own universe far away from the capital.
His paintings represent the cities of his imagination; cities he loves to stroll around – in fact you will often see him painted there in the company of his wife. In his work, buildings from around the world co-exist, watching each other, bent up with laughter and entwined around each other. Alain has managed to capture the spirit of these cities, of mankind itself. He has transformed Le Touquet Paris-Plage into a fantasy paradise, a town superimposed upon a town, where he is able to unearth the most unlikely of encounters.
His life reflects his art. A bon vivant with a childlike and mischievous perspective, Alain bubbles over with life and love. His paintings convey his passion with all the generosity he embodies.
