Alain Godon: « If a tourist resort does not leave a cultural legacy, it will die”
B irdie » sits on his throne opposite the Palais des Congrès; a work by Alain Godon who is, sentimentally speaking, a « Touquettois » after meeting the love of his life, his wife. He will dedicate this sculpture to Le Touquet in an official ceremony on 5 July. [….]
Leaving a perennial mark
«A town must do everything to leave an artistic legacy. If a tourist resort does not leave this cultural legacy, it is moribund”, believes Alain Godon, “artists who live in a town should help this town to leave its mark for future generations”. And so the artist wants to utilise his network of contacts and his know-how to give a boost to the town which he is so fond of, so that the resort of Le Touquet Paris-Plage leaves its everlasting mark in History. “Birdie” is really “the icing on the cake” here, emphasises this adopted Touquettois. “I love this town and I want it to continue to sparkle and to shine”, he adds. This is the reason why Alain Godon is gifting the Birdie sculpture. “Perhaps it will inspire other sculptors to do likewise and inspire the town’s elected representatives to promote culture”, the artist explains. “Promoting culture is important and if I don’t take part in this, then it will die; there is nothing worse than allowing a town to die culturally. Art keeps us alive!”, Alain Godon continues rebelliously. « By offering this sculpture, I am offering the town the possibility of a little more artistic credibility and so perhaps to encourage donations from other artists.
