Pop art and fantasy with Alain Godon
The Wilson Gallery is hosting the works of Alain Godon until 23 December and you are struck by their cheerfulness, their energy, and their capacity to reinvent an enchanting and whimsical reality. Many are the legendary cities that have become his preferred subjects and their unmissable landmarks are aesthetically showcased in a pop art style :
Under an improbable sky spattered with shooting stars and dominated by a moon strewn with vast craters, the Moulin Rouge surges out of the night like a fairy-tale castle; against an orange sky, we are able to view the Eiffel Tower with the Jules Verne restaurant at its base through new eyes; and a magical New York sees the Chrysler Building transformed by a green sky at Christmas time…Architecture transformed
Still recognisable, he transforms architecture through a visionary hyperrealism, distorting the contours of buildings, making them lean from one side to another, upsetting the original geometry. The naive and poetic way in which he paints both nature and people owes much to the art of film animation and the art of illustration.
